I have read about this place many times. And I've been wanting to go. But we were all set to take Dar and Sean to the Molly Kathleen Mine on Tuesday. They have a great tour there that we took two years ago. But...come to find out they are only open on weekends for the winter. Bummer. So we headed off to the one of the strangest places I have ever been.
The name of the place is Bishop's Castle. It's in the mountains east of Pueblo. As you can tell, the elevation is higher than us and it was chilly. The entire castle has been built by one man (except for the tower built by his father) over a period of 40 years. Mr. Bishop is still alive and still building.
There are strange politically incorrect signs everywhere. He must be quite a character.
The castle was crazy dangerous with ice covering many of the steps. We did not attempt these! Instead we climbed up steps on the inside.
Only Sean climbed up to the top of the tower. I am afraid of heights and we had to diligently watch the young ones as there were open places they could fall through everywhere.
There were individual stained glass windows. I think they might be sold to raise money?
The inside isn't finished but it is magnificent.
The view from the upstairs balcony is incredible.
The king and queen of the castle had a blast!
I think we'll visit in summer next time!
